What do we do?

Broadly speaking volunteering falls into the following categories but there is so much more that you can do that sits outside this!

  • Tour Guides: Lead guided tours, providing visitors with interesting and informative insights into our exhibits.
  • Exhibit Maintenance: Assist with the care and maintenance of our unique hovercraft collection.
  • Event Support: Help organize and run special events, educational programs, and workshops.
  • Shop/Café and Ticket Office Assistants: Assist in our café, gift shop, and ticket office, providing excellent customer service and helping visitors on their visit around the museum and finding the perfect souvenir.
  • Back Office: Help us with our administration and keeping things on track such as project management, finance, communications, social media, and fundraising.

Some volunteers just take on one of these areas, while others wear many hats. Volunteering in one area doesn’t mean you can do others too!

Where and When do we do it?

Volunteering happens all year round rain or shine. During our opening season we welcome guests in on Saturday and Sundays.

Besides those times there is still a lot to do, from helping with evening or weekday events such as school visits or private tours, to completing engineering or site works we can’t do when open.

The majority of our activity is completed on the museum premises, however, with modern technology we’re able to work outside the confines of the physical world and work remotely on Zoom meetings and using Microsoft Teams where the task allows it.

Who do we Need Right Now?

While we always consider applications to volunteer with us, there are certain areas where we need extra or specific help. Right now we are particularly interested in people to help with:

  • Ticket Office & Shop/Café Team Members: Help us manage the ticket office, assist in the shop and café, and provide excellent customer service to our visitors.
  • Subject Matter Experts: We are looking for professionals with expertise in legal matters, fundraising, IT/technology and other specialized areas to support our operations and growth.
  • Project Managers: Assist in coordinating and overseeing various projects within the museum, ensuring they are completed efficiently and effectively.
  • Events & Bookings Coordinator: Help organize and manage events, coordinate bookings, and ensure that all activities run smoothly.
  • Fundraisers: Assist with fundraising efforts to support the museum’s initiatives and help secure the financial resources needed for our continued success.
  • Handyperson or Site Maintenance: Provide general maintenance and repairs to keep our site in top condition, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for visitors.
  • Gardener/Landscaper: Help maintain and beautify our outdoor spaces, creating an inviting atmosphere for our visitors.
